Cassandra Staples- Class of 2018 Los Angeles, California
Hello! My name is Cassie Staples. During my time at Santa Su, I took part in Stagecraft with a main interest in Lighting Design. After graduating, I decided I wanted to continue my studies in technical production. I am currently studying at the University of California, Los Angeles as a Theater major. Since high school, I have worked on the lighting design for several productions, ranging from operas, to straight plays, to musicals. I even was part of the original lighting design for the new musical "Rebel Genius!" I have started branching out into other areas of design as well. I was working on Projections Design for "Sweetland," an outdoor operatic experience, when COVID hit. Not missing a beat, I decided to take up a different form of production design. I began learning about the Unreal Engine, and have worked on 3 separate projects as an Unreal Developer since quarantine started. I am currently working as the CG coordinator on a virtual production of "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" using the Unreal Engine as a production platform. I am so grateful to SSHS for giving me the skills I needed to make it in this industry! |

Michael Mitchell- Class of 2015 Santa Cruz, California
I was in Stagecraft from my sophomore to senior year. I then spent two years at Moorpark Community College and then transferred to UC Santa Cruz where I studied Anthropology and Sustainability Studies. I graduated with cum laude honors in 2019 and have continued to live in Santa Cruz. Many of the skills I learned from Stagecraft had prepared me for the current work I do. All the experience with building sets and power tools gave me the confidence to work in construction part time. The crew I work with focuses on a method known as “Natural Building” where we specialize in straw bale homes and cob. These methods use more natural materials like clay, straw and sand to build adobe-like structures. Tech also instilled a mindset of teamwork to achieve a common goal, which directly transferred to me becoming a partial owner in a small business. I helped start a compost cooperative, Hard Core Compost, in 2019 with six other individuals. Our co-op is a bike powered residential compost pickup service where our members collect organic waste from Santa Cruz residents and turn into it fertile compost! All our collection is done on bicycles with trailers and we process about a ton of waste a week from over 250 households. I am now preparing for a six-month farm apprenticeship program at Green Gulch, a zen monastery in Marin, which will start in early April. After that I intend to apply to grad school to pursue a masters in Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems. |

Since graduating, I have still been creating all the show posters for productions put on by the Troubadour Classic Theatre Company! After High School, I spent a short time at Moorpark College, then transferred to ArtCenter College of Design where I graduated with honors and earned my BFA in Graphic Design with a minor in Business and a focus on Brand Identity and Packaging Design. During my time in college, I used many skills that I developed while in Stagecraft especially when it came to working with my hands, collaborating with others, and problem-solving! Today I live in Irvine, CA. I am a Graphic Designer on the Drybar Team for Helen of Troy working on anything from the product packaging to the retail merchandising you see in stores! |

I was interested in Stagecraft when I did some backstage work for my mom in late middle school. I finally got into Stagecraft my junior year of high school. I loved it so I did it again my senior year of high school. I had no intention of pursuing Stagecraft professionally but I did miss doing shows after I graduated. After about a year I found myself doing shows with the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center. I did shows off and on there until 2018 when I moved to Camarillo to go to CSUCI. I haven't done a show since but I do miss so I hope to fall back into it someday. |
